bp Enhances Retail Safety with Reveal Body Cameras
In a significant push to enhance safety at its retail locations, bp has expanded the deployment of Reveal’s Calla body cameras to better protect both staff and customers amidst increasing concerns over retail crime. This initiative follows a successful pilot in 2023, which demonstrated a noticeable reduction in verbal abuse incidents and improved the overall safety of store environments.
Sonya Adams, VP of Mobility & Convenience Retail in the UK at bp, stressed the importance of these measures:
“Safety comes first at bp; we are always looking at ways we can create a safer working environment for colleagues and a better retail experience for customers. We serve millions of customers every week with the vast majority of transactions being pleasant and positive. However, in line with the rest of the retail sector, we are seeing an increase in crime and abuse of our colleagues, and that’s unacceptable".
After witnessing notable success in its initial pilot—where the cameras were trialled in 8 UK stores facing high levels of verbal abuse—bp is now implementing Reveal's body cameras more broadly. These devices have been instrumental in reducing incidents of abuse, with some customers even apologising for their behaviour after viewing themselves on the cameras' front-facing screens. Alasdair Field, CEO of Reveal, highlighted the cameras' impact, noting,
"The feedback from bp’s retail team members has been overwhelmingly positive during the pilot. Reveal body cameras significantly enhanced their job satisfaction by reducing incidents".
The body cameras are currently in use at 70 bp-owned stores and are being rolled out at an accelerated pace to more locations with high incident rates. This expanded use of Reveal body cameras marks a significant step in bp's efforts to enhance security measures and provide a safer shopping and working environment, demonstrating the company's leadership in adopting innovative solutions to address retail challenges.
