Over 5,500 Sepura TETRA radios operated on TETRA infrastructure deployed specifically for these games by the local operator MS-SPETSTELECOM for the Government of Tatarstan.

Sepura enabled seamless communications at the 27th Universiade, also known as World University Games, which took place in Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia from the 6th to the 17th July 2013.  The Universiade is a biennial International multi-sport event, organised for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation.

Kazan saw over 10,000 international athletes and tens of thousands of support staff and spectators descend on the city. Competitions took place at 64 different sports venues across the region, 30 of which had been specially constructed for the 2013 University Games.

In order to address all security requirements, always a primary concern for organisers of large scale events, it was agreed that radio communications should be provided by a licensed TETRA operator to ensure that all emergency, public safety and fast-response agencies were able to share a robust and reliable communication system.

Over 5,500 Sepura TETRA radios operated on TETRA infrastructure deployed specifically for these games by the local operator MS-SPETSTELECOM for the Government of Tatarstan. The radio models selected comprise the STP8000, STP8200 and STP9200 hand-portables and the SRG3900 mobile terminal; all radios these were mainly used by organisations responsible for security and safety at the event.

TETRA technology gave flexibility in interoperability between a variety of associated organisations and departments, fundamental during large scale sporting events like the Universiade. In addition a special application specifically developed for this event enabled remote programming of the TETRA radios, hence streamlining what would have otherwise been a time-intensive process.

Yury Gorshkov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MS-SPETSTELECOM said: "Our key criteria in selecting TETRA terminals were robustness and audio quality because of the potential for radios to be dropped or knocked and because of the crowd noise that would occur during the sporting events. Sepura radios came out ahead of the competing terminals on both counts. Selecting Sepura gave us what we needed, from secure communications through to good support and reliability".

Kasper Barfoed, Regional Director for Sepura commented: "Sepura TETRA solutions are transforming communications in the run up to, and during, large scale sporting or political events, festivals and concerts. Major events require years of planning and security, safety and communications considerations are at the heart of each stage. Our communication solution gives governments, cities, event organisers and field workers peace of mind that there will always be an open channel of communication, ensuring both public safety and seamless co-ordination".
