112 will be India's Nationwide Emergency Number

Developed on the lines of 911 in the United States of America, 112 is likely to be India's one-of-a-kind emergency number. According to sources, the number is slated to begin with a focus on women in distress and will gradually include all emergency services.
There are also plans to install a panic button in public transport vehicles across the country. All calls on the number will be transferred to the Central Control room in Delhi from where they will be transferred to call centres in different cities. Three thousand to four thousand trained personal will be attending the calls at these centres.
The emergency number will be equipped to handle nearly 10 lakh callers a day.

The proposal has been funded from the Nirbhaya fund.
This service will not be city or state specific but will cater to the entire country. Sources claim that the scheme is being designed in such a way that once pressed, assistance will be provided to the needy within minutes.
Sources say, there is a plan in place to use alert vehicles armed with hi-tech tablets and not just normal police vans to act on complaints on the emergency number.
