Ericsson introduces on-demand 5G network slicing for Android 14
A new on-demand network slicing capability in the latest version of Android, Android 14, will allow communications service providers to offer their consumer subscribers the choice of enhanced performance for any application that supports a 5G network slice. Supported by Ericsson's core network software, the functionality can be provided to subscribers for a time-limited period according to their subscription plan.
With this new functionality, users of Android 14 devices will have more control over their 5G experience, while CSPs and developers have the flexibility to create personalized and flexible services to meet the unique needs of their subscribers.
"Enhancing network slicing with this on-demand functionality gives communications service providers wider choices and more flexibility when it comes to developing new and exciting services for consumer subscribers. As well as this, it simplifies onboarding of subscribers to experience the true value of 5G. Ericsson has been driving superior service experience and also 5G monetization from the get-go," said Monica Zethzon, Head of Solution Area Core Networks, Ericsson.
This new functionality builds upon the existing support for 5G network slicing in Android 12 or above versions. With Android 13, app developers have the ability to incorporate functions and capabilities in their applications that align with specific network characteristics, such as lower latency or higher bandwidth, offered by CSP-provisioned network slices.
