Leonardo to Support the Grand Finale of 'The Ocean Race' in Genoa with Critical Communications Technology
As a sponsor, it has provided the organisers with a professional communications system for the event’s coordination and safe running
This is the first time the great round-the-world sailing regatta is coming to the Mediterranean. The host port for this year’s final leg is Genoa, making it the sea and yachting capital par excellence. Leonardo, as sponsor of the event, has provided a professional communications system for its coordination and safe running.
The team-based round-the-world race in stages, which began in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race, then became the Volvo Ocean Race until 2018 and is now known as The Ocean Race, has come to Genoa in Italy to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. Beginning in January in Alicante, Spain, the world’s most challenging and legendary sailing race is finishing in the Mediterranean for the first time. And Genoa is ready to host all the events scheduled for the week of the “Grand Finale”.
Leonardo’s involvement
Leonardo, as a “Genova Supporter”, is also taking part in the event. As a sponsor, it has provided the organisers with a professional communications system for the event’s coordination and safe running, including a TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) Radio Base Station (SRB) for radio coverage of the event area, 80 TETRA terminals, and a control room for the management of radio communications and the localisation of resources in the area.
Mission-critical solutions for major events
Leonardo’s critical communications solutions implement the Hybrid Multi-Carrier Network concept and can fully integrate narrowband technologies, such as TETRA, and broadband with the advent of next-generation networks.
With its mission critical radio communications solutions, Leonardo ensures the safe running of major sporting events such as the 2021 and 2023 editions of the Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo. It did likewise for the 2020 and 2021 editions of the 1000 Miglia, for which the company provided an integrated mobile security system that followed the entire historic car race as it traversed Italy.
Genoa, a digitised and sustainable city
Leonardo has a strong connection with the areas in which it operates, and with Genoa this connection is particularly strong. The capital of Liguria - which is also home to Leonardo’s Cyber & Security Academy, a centre for advanced training and refresher courses for security experts, and to the davinci-1, one of the most powerful supercomputers in the Aerospace, Defence and Security sector - has embarked on a path of digitisation and innovation to best meet the challenges of optimising services and raising levels of sustainability.
‘The 4 axes of strength’ project is Leonardo’s latest major partnership in the development of Genoa as a smart city. This project sees the creation of a fully electrified system on the main routes through the city. It uses monitoring solutions supported by advanced video-analysis algorithms based on artificial intelligence to optimise the service in terms of both user services and public transport sustainability.
