TCCA CCBG Chairman States that Adoption of Public Safety LTE is Cultural
In an interview with Radioresource Magazine, Tero Pesonen, chair of the TCCA Critical Communications Broadband Group (CCBG), discusses the public protection and disaster relief (PPDR) broadband market.
In the US focused publication for the PMR Industry, Sandra Wendelken talks with Tero Pesonen about the latest developments on the public-safety broadband standard and looks ahead and discusses CCBG activities set for 2017.
In the interview, Pesonen does not disclose a lot of new insights and information regarding his view on the adoption of PS-LTE in addition to the information you'll hear from him during critical communication events around the world. However, one of the interesting things is that Pesonen states that the adoption of PS-LTE is cultural. In the interview he says; "LTE is cultural. Some agencies may have a burning need for broadband services. There is a great drive to move on. Others are more traditional or risk averse and might be quite happy with the service they have".
According to Pesonen, the next steps for PPDR broadband standards are in the upcoming 3GPP RAN75 plenary meeting in March 2017. This meeting will start with the priorities for Release 15.
Also, the 'Release 14 freeze' is an important topic. Pesonen hopes that he gets the current studies to a decent point to further the standardisation momentum.
On the future goals for the CCBG, Pesonen says that there is a fixed priority to ensure the CCBG (the needs of the members of the TCCA CCBG) needs are addressed in the standardisation process. Much of the CCBG's activity is to focus on the spectrum for operation of hybrid networks. On that topic, the CCBG hopes to start addressing limitations in regulation in different countries.
Other topics that are discussed in the interview are; the long term vision of Pesonen on his vision for PPDR Broadband and the different roles that PS-LTE deployments follow in Europe.
CCBG
The aim of the CCBG is to enable all mission critical and business critical users to access their information systems, intranet and internet at broadband speeds using their professional mobile devices wherever they are and whenever they have the need. This broadband capability should meet the specific needs of the user in the same way that critical voice and narrowband data services are currently delivered by technologies such as TETRA, Tetrapol, P25 and others.
