Nokia spin off lands telecom first with dynamic, context-aware profiles to guarantee connection quality and speed

Cloudstreet, the Nokia spin-off specialized in delivering dynamic, application-aware connectivity for guaranteed service quality, working with the US Department of Commerce's PSCR (Public Safety Communications Research) program based at Boulder Labs, has achieved a telecommunications technology first for immediate application in world-wide public safety communications broadband systems, including FirstNet, the federal emergency responder network. The technology will play a critical role in helping US first responders deliver on the bandwidth demands of such applications as 24/7 body cameras and a widening array of safety-critical surveillance and monitoring systems.

Leveraging the power of Cloudstreet's patented Dynamic Profile Control (DPC) engine, PSCR and Cloudstreet have run the first successful demonstration of user devices making machine or manual requests for a dynamic (on-the-fly) profile change in a standard LTE Network. While balancing and orchestrating device demands within the network to prevent overload, Cloudstreet's DPC engine permits end user devices to transmit self-aware context changes dynamically to allow on-the-fly profile changes and ensure consistent and predictable quality of service.

Among the many critical applications that will leverage the advanced Cloudstreet/FirstNet system are mandated body cameras for state and local police, real-time surveillance and security monitoring systems as well as global data and voice communications across the entire continental US first responder network.

Overcoming the challenges of limited bandwidth for mission-critical monitoring and communications, Cloudstreet ensures the ability to guarantee connection quality and speed, thus delivering on a critical part of the public safety mandate. Along with strengthening the core telecom infrastructure that supports an array of vital services, this network-wide enhancement will serve to help balance available bandwidth for all.

"This is an important milestone for Cloudstreet towards realizing our vision of the Application-Aware Network," said Mika Skarp, Founder and CTO of Cloudstreet. "We are excited to have the opportunity to provide a perfect display of this telecom technology first, and to do so in one of the most rigorous testing and qualification environments imaginable. The deployment not only proves that different devices can call on differentiated levels of service in a single network, but that overall network performance will only benefit as a result. We're honored to be sharing in this achievement with such an innovative federal research body as the PSCR."

Under a CRADA (Cooperative Research and Development Agreement), PSCR and Cloudstreet have been at work toward today's proof-of-concept for over a year. Currently enabled for the 3GPP LTE network, the system will provide some of the anticipated network capabilities of fifth generation, (5G) telecommunications some four years before their anticipated roll-out.

About Cloudstreet
Founded in 2010, Cloudstreet is a cloud-based service platform for telecom operators, combining business and network layer technologies to provide context-specific bandwidth-on-demand, first developed at Nokia's Silicon Valley campus.

Aligned with the principles of net-neutrality, Cloudstreet directly addresses the need for operators to manage the delivery of customer-oriented, application-aware quality-of-service within their networks, while ensuring open and equal access to the Internet.

Cloudstreet is provisioned to users based on the dynamic details of an application-specific profile to deliver highly personalized services dynamically, while effectively balancing network traffic and data demand. From streaming HD Video-on-Demand to data-intensive apps and the emerging Internet-of-Things, Cloudstreet bridges the gap between the digital services we all use, need and enjoy and the network infrastructure that serves them.

About PSCR
Housed within the Department of Commerce Labs in Boulder, Colorado, the PSCR program is a joint effort between the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Communications Technology Laboratory and the National Information and Telecommunications Administration's Institute for Telecommunication Sciences. The very successful research performance of the joint effort has earned two Department of Commerce Gold Medal awards, the highest honor granted by the Department, as well as two Silver and two Bronze Medal awards.

The PSCR program performs research on behalf of the US Department of Homeland Security's Office for Interoperability and Compatibility and Office of Emergency Communications, and FirstNet to advance public safety communications interoperability.
