PSCE chairs the Critical Comms and Public Safety session at the EuCNC in Ljubjana
On 19 June, Sanja Holen (PSCE) chaired the special session Critical communications and public safety – National and European Perspectives at the European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC) in Ljubljana.
In this session, Gerard Carmona (French MoI) shared the practitioner's view on 5g potential; Sanja Holen discussed the European perspective and the BroadWay Project, a pre-Commercial Procurement for Pan-European Interoperable Broadband Public Safety Communication Network. Finally, Kory Golob from the Ministry of public administration, Information Society Directorate presented the Slovenian ecosystem for 5G vertical PPDR.
Session summary
Live EU Interoperable mobile systems are expected to be developed and released for use by PPDR responders within the 2025 timeframe allowing them access to rich broadband mobile services over commercial networks. But public safety requires that these services are implemented and operated to provide essential ‘mission critical’ class of service maintaining consistent levels of availability, regardless of the nature of the public safety situation, or geopolitical circumstance.
The special session was focused at presenting the needs and requirements of the PPDR sector, the standardisation progress for critical mobile communications and the solutions that 5G offers both with national plans and European perspective. This transition to shared infrastructure requires also safeguards related to preemption and priority rules.
