As Penang commemorates 50 years of industrialization, THIS YEAR has already been historic for many business titans there.

Last night, Motorola Solutions Malaysia added its name to the list as it celebrated 50 years of excellence in Malaysia in front of thousands of employees and representatives from federal and state agencies.

In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Motorola Solutions developed its first-ever semiconductor operations outside of North America.

Later, Penang was selected as the company's new location for its manufacturing plant and its R&D activities.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said it was Motorola’s belief in the state that this strategic partnership has been instrumental in growing the Malaysian electrical and electronics ecosystem with a strong local presence and established partnerships to achieve best-in-class supply chain management.

“I am pleased to note that not only has the Penang operations become one of the largest fully integrated sites for Motorola Solutions worldwide but the Penang research and development centre is also supported by a solid base of local Malaysian knowledge workforce of over 98%.

“They are all working on leading-edge mission-critical technologies and boasted many globally recognised technologists.

“Penang’s reputation as having a robust industrial ecosystem and as a state that punches way above its weight, is a collective success.

“In last week’s tabling of the state Budget for 2023, I had the honour of informing the State Legislative Assembly that Penang has recorded a 6.8% growth rate, the highest among the other states in Malaysia.

“We maintained our leading position in contributing 33.2% of the country’s export value as of September 2022. In addition, the  electrical and electronics sector contributed the highest export value at RM32.7 billion as of June 2022.
