Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

Dr. Andreas Riemann, head of the concep and development department at BDBOS, the operator of the German public safety and critical communications network, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, awarded by the Federal President, was presented to Riemann by the Federal Minister of the Interior and for Home Affairs, Nancy Faeser, on September 4, 2024.

The award of merit recognizes Andreas Riemann's forty years of civic and social commitment. As a teenager, Andreas Riemann was already a youth group leader with the Boy Scouts, where he organized joint meetings for Allied and Berlin Boy Scouts in divided Berlin. During his 15-year stay in the conflict zone of Northern Ireland, he brought young people and adults from the conflict parties together through diving as a volunteer diving instructor and was also active in the national marine conservation research project. Since his return to Germany, he has been active in two fire departments at the same time and is still an active member of the volunteer fire department today.

Andreas Riemann was born in Berlin. In 1999, he received his doctorate from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland with a thesis on the effects of radio interference on medical technology.

After working in North Rhine-Westphalia, Northern Ireland and Bavaria in the fields of mobile communications and automotive, he took over the management of the Concept and Development Department at BDBOS in September 2021.
