City of Deming Awards Federal Engineering Contract for Fire Dispatching Consulting

Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

City of Deming, New Mexico has awarded Federal Engineering, Inc. (FE) a contract to evaluate its current radio system and develop alternatives for an upgrade or replacement.

Chief Joseph Owen of the Deming Fire Department stated: “The City of Deming Fire Department (DFD) currently operates a VHF radio system consisting of two transmitter sites and is dispatched by Luna County. System users are experiencing coverage challenges, both outdoors and indoors. An upgrade or replacement is needed to address radio system coverage, reliability, and resiliency issues with the current radio system. Our goal is to improve the radio coverage in the greater population areas, and we acknowledge that this may require additional network sites.”

“Federal Engineering will conduct a comprehensive needs assessment, including user interviews, surveys of the Fire Department’s existing radio sites, and visits to potential future sites. In conjunction with the City’s technical experts, FE will analyze coverage, technologies, and system configuration alternatives to enhance coverage and system performance. A conceptual design and budgetary cost estimate of the most feasible solution, based on the DFD goals, and budget will be formulated.” concluded Chief Owen.

Mr. Rajit Jhaver, Associate Vice President of the LMR/Wireless Practice for Federal Engineering, explained:

“FE has served the public safety community for over 41 years and has extensive experience working with multiple jurisdictions in New Mexico to improve their public safety communications. Our goal is to equip the Deming Fire Department with enough knowledge to make an informed decision as to the best approach for improving system performance. After the report has been approved, Deming’s FD has the option to add FCC Licensing, Procurement Support, and Implementation Management tasks to our contract.”
