Circular issued to return Tetra sets
"Games are over, we don't need to be connected to other agencies."
The Organising Committee (OC) on Thursday issued a circular asking all its employees to return the Tetra handsets they were given as part of a communication network during the Commonwealth Games. The circular at the OC office read that if the workforce did not return the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (Tetra) handsets by Thursday evening they would face heavy penalty. There were reports that the workforce was not returning the handsets resulting in misuse and some of them were even lost in the process. The OC has to pay R8,000 per handset as rent to the Delhi government for using it.
"It is an expensive product and we have to account for all of them. It has been a week that the Games are over and we have to account for each and every set," said a senior OC official.
The Delhi government purchased the Tetra network from a Norwegian firm at a cost of R100 crores.
Various government agencies such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Police, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), and Public Works Department (PWD) have also started returning the handsets to the Delhi government.
"Games are over, we don't need to be connected to other agencies. We have our own mobile phones to stay connected with each other. We will be returning the sets to the IT department," said a senior DTC officer.
According to NDMC, they were given the sets for a period of two months and will be returned by the end of the month. According to sources, the Tetra sets are still plagued by network problems that had occurred during the Games period too.
