ANSALDO STS obtains orders totalling EUR 183 million

The company is awarded new contracts in Denmark (Cityringen), India (Kolkata metro) and Italy (Line B of the Rome Metro)

Ansaldo STS (STS.MI), a Finmeccanica Group company, has recently been given the go-ahead by the Danish Ministry of Transport and the Municipalies of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg to additionally supply the the city’s new metro line, called Cityringen. The option was included in the contract signed on 7 January 2011 and is worth a total of EUR 122 million. Ansaldo STS will assign the construction of the high-tech trainsets to AnsaldoBreda, a Finmeccanica company.

The new line, which will run entirely underground, will be a fully automated metro with a driverless system that has undergone further developments since the version used previously in Denmark, and will extend for 16 km through the centre of Copenhagen, connecting 17 stations. The operation of this line is scheduled for 2018.

Ansaldo STS has won a contract worth EUR 46 million from Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), the company that manages the metro Rail Project in Kolkata, in India. Ansaldo STS will undertake the design, construction, installation and placement into service of the Train control, Signalling and Telecommunication systems of the new KMRCL East - West Line (EWL) in the metropolitan city of Kolkata, with a population of over five million in the Eastern part of India. The new KMRCL EWL will be 14.7 km long, will intersect the existing North-South line (16.5 km long, with 24 stations), and will link the township of Howrah with city of Kolkata. 5.8 km of the line will be elevated, and 8.9 km underground, including a 550- metre stretch under the river Hooghly. There will be 12 new stations, comprising six underground and six elevated

The scope of Ansaldo STS responsibilities comprises the following: Automatic Train Protection/Operation, Centralised operations, Integrated Telecommunications with TETRA Radio System, Operational telephones system, Closed Circuit Television Surveillance & Access Control, Passenger Information System etc. The work, which will begin in October, 2011 is to be completed in 52 months. The new contract confirms Ansaldo STS’ commitment in India, where currently directly employs around 230 people.

Ansaldo STS is part of the consortium formed with Salini Costruttori and Vianini Lavori, that was awarded the concession for the executive design and construction of the extension of line B of the Rome Metro between Rebibbia and Casal Monastero. The concession also includes the subsequent management of the station equipment and services, and the areas and equipment for managing the interchange of passenger flows.
ASTS will build the automation, signalling and telecommunications equipment (worth around EUR 15 million) using its innovative “multi-station” technology.
