Improved Response Time Due to Smart Helmet Use in Firefighting
Scottish researchers introduced a smart helmet for firefighters that uses sensor technologies, thermal cameras, and AI to help find people faster. The National Robotarium in Edinburgh created the headgear with Scottish Fire and Rescue. The idea was tested at the fire service's training facility in Edinburgh. The helmet combines images from radar, inertial, and thermal cameras to give firefighters real-time knowledge into their location, team, and victims in a blaze. Dr. Chris Lu, who conducted the experiment, said firefighters typically had limited or no sight owing to smoke. This makes locating victims and firemen difficult in time-sensitive situations.
“This new technology can help on-the-ground firefighters and scene commanders make key in-the-moment decisions that can boost search rescue efficiency, promote safer collaboration amongst teams, and better outcomes for possible fire victims,” he added.
The concept integrates sensors onto a typical firefighter's helmet, making it a cost-effective and easily deployed option. Teams may integrate the design into their usual gear rather than roll out new equipment.
The team hopes to combine 3D mapping technology into the helmet to provide wearers a better visual picture of their surroundings and to improve communication between frontline firefighters and their off-site crew.
