Movistar Empresas Presents Emergency LTE Backpack for Mining Industry

Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

Telefonica’s Movistar Empresas unit in Chile has showcased a dedicated 4G emergency communications backpack for the mining sector at the Exponor 2024 event in Antofagasta. The kit, dubbed X4, weighs just 12KG and provides a private LTE network that can be set up in remote areas and in the event of crisis situations such as forest fires or earthquakes.

If communications are cut, the kit’s LTE/satellite connection gives users the option of connecting up to 100 devices in real time by creating a critical communications “bubble” spanning between 5 and 72 km, said the company, adding that the battery lasts around 48 hours and can be recharged with solar panels.

Movistar Empresas recently launched the first LTE-M network in Chile, allowing businesses to connect their Internet of Things (IoT) devices at low power across wide areas.
