Until now, the company's staff have been spread over five locations. The new 7000 square metre building currently houses 250 Tait staff and has capacity for 450.

The new TAIT technology building was yesterday opened by New Zealand Prime minister John Key. Het said: "Christchurch is facing "two steps forward, one step back", in its slow journey toward recovery. The new Tait development is a vision of what's in store for the city".

Chief executive Garry Diack said he was "very happy" to see the building open.

"You can sit in a building like this, and run a business like this and believe you're doing a good job, but it's not until you see all the support in one place at one time and it really does come together that you realise the business really is doing well."

Diack said the company had no hesitations about committing to Christchurch for the long term. "The desires of the business have always been to run a business for the benefit of Christchurch and New Zealand. That commitment has never wavered and from my point of view, never will."

High value products like Tait's technology were vital to the country's ongoing economic success, especially with high exchange rates faced by exporters, he said.
