Teltronic in Action: Fighting Wildfires in Bahia with a Mobile Unit

Curated by: Gert Jan Wolf - Editor-in Chief for The Critical Communications Review

During this year’s dry season, wildfires have caused significant devastation in Serra da Bandeira, near the city of Barreiras, and in Muquim do São Francisco, in Bahia. To tackle this challenge, firefighters and brigades equipped with the mobile unit developed by Teltronic for Stelecom are using cutting-edge technology to coordinate fire-fighting operations.

Teltronic’s mobile unit, integrated into the state’s TETRA digital radio communication network, provides operational mobility and a rapid response capability in hard-to-reach areas. Strategically positioned near the flames, the unit ensures effective communication in remote locations where other communication technologies fail. This capability allows on-the-ground agents to communicate with each other, the regional Integrated Communication Center (CICOM), and other state units.

Moreover, the information obtained from the mobile unit helps guide firefighting teams, allowing for immediate adjustments in strategies according to the direction of the flames, which can be influenced by factors such as wind, topography, and weather conditions. This constant monitoring is essential to ensure a quick and efficient response, even in challenging scenarios. The equipment enables firefighters, often without a clear view of the fire’s extent, to receive real-time information that facilitates decision-making on the spot. The use of this technology ensures that emergency operations are more coordinated and safe, increasing the effectiveness of firefighting efforts. The application of Teltronic’s solutions demonstrates the importance of advanced technology in critical situations, allowing for the protection of lives and the preservation of the environment during one of the region’s most challenging periods.
