Devon bus operator migrates to DMR digital

Bus operator, Stagecoach South West, is to upgrade the analogue radio communications system used by its buses in Devon to a new digital system.

The company has invested in a new Motorola Mototrbo digital solution - provided by Exeter-based two-way radio specialists, Premier Communication Electronics (PCE) - which will be rolled out from April across the fleet of 300 Stagecoach buses that serve the Exeter, Exmouth, Torquay and Barnstaple areas.

The bespoke solution - which will replace an ageing legacy analogue system, currently serviced by PCE - consists of 300 fixed mobile radios, three strategically placed repeaters and a new VHF Ofcom licence.

The solution will also include TRBOnet software, which enables despatch depot managers to monitor all calls to the radio. According to PCE, the software is also “primed for the future” with data platform capabilities and the potential to integrate with advanced features such as IT-enabled applications.

PCE managing director, Karen Langley, said: “Stagecoach South West has committed to an investment to migrate to a digital radio system that will enable its employees to benefit from improved communications between its buses and depots.

“Our skilled engineers will deploy the new solution during a three month period to fit in with the day-to-day requirements of Stagecoach South West’s busy schedule. We look forward to working closely with them to achieve a modern two-way radio communications system that befits the level of investment Stagecoach South West has made in its Devon bus network.”

Mike Bishop, Stagecoach South West’s engineering director, added: “The implementation of this state-of-the-art digital radio system will benefit both our staff and our customers. I’m very pleased to be working in partnership with this locally-based organisation.”

PCE says it will provide an ongoing maintenance contract to service and repair the system.
