The £4.8m contract was officially signed on the 24 December 2012 and will come into immediate effect.

Airwave, the leading mission critical voice and data communications provider, has announced that the Highways Agency has extended their current contract for an additional 22 months.

The £4.8m contract was officially signed on the 24 December 2012 and will come into immediate effect.

Primarily responsible for managing, maintaining and improving England’s motorways and trunk roads, the Highways Agency uses the dedicated Airwave Service to manage traffic and tackle congestion. In addition, they provide information to road users and to improve safety and journey time reliability, whilst respecting and minimising the adverse impact on the environment.

According to Al Edwards, Project Manager and Sponsor, Highways Agency: “We have been using the Airwave Network since 2005, and continue to benefit from the service, which enables us to communicate between all of our own control rooms and those of other agencies and partners.

Every Highways Agency patrol vehicle is equipped with an Airwave radio programmed with the shared channels (talk groups) to monitor incidents as they happen. This means that when officers arrive at an incident they are already fully briefed.
