Tor affects TETRA network for Emergency Services in Norway
Strong winds causes power outages in several places in Norway that led to outages of the Nødnett TETRA network. The county of Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsda were most affected by the outage in the Emergency Network.
Yesterday Nødnett stated that mainly municipalities in western Norway were hit. There were 10 base stations down in this area.
In total there are around 1,200 stations on the Nødnett TETRA network and 25 base stations were out of operation. There were also a small number of base stations that were supported by a backup power battery, said Chief Operating Officer of the Directorate for Emergency Communication, Dagfinn Sjøvik.
Outages were mainly due to power failures and breach of transmission lines to the base stations. With regard to the transmission lines, the emergency network depends on the robustness of the power supply and leased telecommunication lines from subcontractors, and one must therefore expect that extreme winds such as Tor get some consequences for Nødnett, says Sjøvik.
- We have an ongoing dialogue with our operator. Measures have been taken both by the operator's own team in the field, as well as monitoring of error correction performed by the power companies and Telenor, says Sjøvik.
The Directorate has not received any reports of major events that have been affected by the outage of the Emergency Network, says Sjøvik.
