Airbus Defence and Space modernises the Tetra network of CLP Power Hong Kong
Together with Hong Kong’s largest mobile operator CSL, Airbus Defence and Space provides interoperable technology for future LTE services.
Airbus Defence and Space delivers the latest Tetra solution to the city’s largest power company, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP), thereby collaborating with CSL, Hong Kong’s largest mobile operator. The project’s implementation started recently and will continue over a period of four years on numerous sites in Hong Kong. CSL is the provider of CLP’s existing network, including base stations, switches and services, whereas Airbus Defence and Space will be the key supplier of CLP’s Tetra technology for the next generation of professional mobile radio.
The upgraded system, based on the latest, highly reliable IP-based Tetra technology, will also offer the possibility to support LTE communications services in the future. Moreover, there is an option for CLP to add secure LTE services, based on the Tactilon Suite product family from Airbus Defence and Space. CLP set up a Tetra network for the remote control and monitoring of overhead lines in the early 2000s. This technology helps to improve the reliability of CLP’s power supply.
CLP supplies electricity to around 80% of Hong Kong’s population. The company owns and operates over 14,900 kilometres of transmission and high-voltage distribution overhead lines and cables, with more than 14,200 substations, managing about 2.5 million customer accounts in Hong Kong. The company has been using a Tetra network from Airbus Defence and Space since the early 2000s. It was the first 800 MHz system in the world.
Airbus Defence and Space has implemented various Tetra networks in Hong Kong and China in the past, especially for the public security and transport sector in Asia.
