Thales Partners with Samsung on Combined TETRA/Broadband System

Samsung Electronics and Thales partnered to jointly develop and market a mobile infrastructure and terminals solution combining professional mobile radio (PMR) and 4G technology, giving public-security officials access to high-speed communications services.

The new offering will allow national and local public-safety organizations such as fire brigades, police and emergency services to access critical communications — push to talk (PTT) — combining secured voice, video and data. Thales and Samsung Electronics are an offering supporting both 4G technologies — mobile WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE) — and the TETRA public-safety communications standard.

The solution offers full compatibility with existing PMR networks. Thales is using its TeMax system, a high-speed PMR radio solution, to which Samsung’s 4G technology has been added.

“This unique and innovative integration of 4G technologies and TETRA will make more advanced and efficient communications under guaranteed security. Also, it will be a significant step further to expand addressable markets,” said Woonsub Kim, executive vice president and head of the telecommunication systems business at Samsung. “Based on the numerous experiences in the communications market, Samsung will create the best-fit solution for specific clients.”

Samsung is a prominent player in the mobile WiMAX industry, providing equipment to 56 mobile WiMAX operators in 34 countries. Through the early commitments for 4G technologies, Samsung provides end-to-end LTE solutions including system equipment and devices as well.
