RAKEL Upgrades TETRA base stations in Uppsala County

Source: MCCResources

Last spring, work started to replace the older base stations on the Swedish Mission Critical Public Safety TETRA network, RAKEL.

Until now, much of the replacement has taken place on sites in rural areas. One of the next areas to replace base stations is the county of Uppsala. The Uppsala Country (just above the city of Stockholm) covers 8.207 km², 350.000 inhabitants and has Uppsala as the main city.

Upgrading the current base stations is part of effort to modernize RAKEL with new equipment and new capacity for better accessibility and to better prepare RAKEL for the future. Altogether, a quarter of all RAKEL base stations will be replaced.

When a base station is replaced, RAKEL coverage will go down. However in a major city, this base station will be overlapped with the capacity of a nearby base station with the result that the end user will not notice any difference in communication.

However, if the change concerns a base station in an unpopulated area, coverage wil go down for limited time.

In general, end users on the RAKEL network will be informed about the start of the works at least two weeks before.
