Nødnett TETRA Coverage in More than 300 Tunnels
The Norwegian Nødnett emergency communications TETRA network is now available in about twice as many tunnels than originally planned.
The strongest growth for Nødnett coverage was in Western and Northern Norway. The number of tunnels that have been built or are planned with Nødnett is now 301, against 154 tunnels that were originally planned. This growth for critical communications on the Norwegian national and country roads, represents an increase of 95 percent and almost doubles the number that was agreed in the original agreement. Particularly the West Coast, Central and Northern Norway experienced the strongest growth.
Helge Eidsnes, regional manager of NPRA and former fire chief in Bergen. "It is positive to see is that there is a large increase in repeat orders, especially in western and northern Norway, and that Nødnett are prioritized in far more tunnels than originally planned".
On March 5th, Nødnett was installed in the Lærdals tunnel. Here Nødnett will be ready for use when the county connects to the network later this year. With its 24.5 km, the Lærdals tunnel is the longest in the world, and thus the world's longest tunnel with Nødnett TETRA coverage. It is required that all new tunnels in Norway, that are over 500 meters in length should be having Nødnett Coverage.
"And it's not just those tunnels that will receive TETRA coverage. Also shorter tunnels (under 500 meters) will get coverage by signals from outside when passing through the tunnel", says project director of DNK, Dagfinn Sjøvik.
